Call for safe workplace for all who work in local government, 1 March 2018

A call for safe workplaces for all who work in local government was issued today amid news that the State Government is likely to take action on the City of Perth Council.

The call was made by LG Professionals WA, the organisation that represents people who work in local government in WA.

“Local government is no different to any other workplace and it is critical for employers to provide a safe workplace, particularly for senior officers who interact regularly with elected members,” said Candy Choo, the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer.

“Like any other workplace, when groups of people of diverse backgrounds and priorities work together, disagreement and conflict inevitably occur. In contrast to what many might believe, disagreement and conflict can be productive if resolved constructively, resulting in better outcomes. However, disagreement and conflict can also lead to a dysfunctional and unsafe work environment and ultimately jeopardise the effectiveness of the local government. This is particularly the case if officers perceive their workplace to be unsupportive or intimidating and that inappropriate behaviours are tolerated.

“Providing a safe workplace is important to all, from elected members, to CEOs, to frontline local government employees. To achieve this, all parties must collaborate and work together on strategies that are solution focussed and evidence based.”

Ms Choo noted that LG Professionals WA has been working closely with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries on the review of the Local Government Act. “We strongly believe that through the review process, measures and policies can be implemented to create a safe work environment where harassment and bullying can be addressed more effectively than we sometimes experience now.

“In order to deliver community focussed outcomes, we must work together. Legislation, policies and protocols should ensure procedural fairness and natural justice are observed for all those involved in local governments at all times. We look forward to continue working with various sector stakeholders to ensure all local government officers are well supported and can perform effectively in their roles.”
