Opening Keynote - Expecting the unexpected
Sharon Warburton
Sharon is a girl from the North West who made good in the corporate world. Her career continues to grow. She has found success in industries dominated by males - including construction, mining and infrastructure. Regularly smashing glass ceilings - she is often the first and usually the only female in the room. As a risk expert she is paid to workshop the 'what if' to identify risks and opportunities and develop mitigation plans. She is paid to expect the unexpected. But even Sharon could not have expected the challenges of recent times. The challenges of losing her little sister to suicide. The challenge of her daughter's leukaemia diagnosis and treatment. The challenge of being bullied on social media by environmental activists. The challenge of living and working in a pandemic with an immune compromised daughter. Sharon will share a 'warts and all' insight into how she tackled the unexpected and how she readies herself for the next challenge!

The Engagement Tightrope
Joel Levin
Sometimes with engagement you can feel like you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. This session will explore some of the key trends in community engagement, their global context and what they mean for our local response. Why are we seeing decreasing levels of trust around the world, why are keyboard warriors showing up at community meetings in greater numbers and with more aggression - and what might we do about it?

A safer, sustainable and better-connected WA
Pat Walker, RAC Executive General Manager Advocacy and Members
The places we live and the ways we connect are evolving, and how we move around is set to transform completely. Autonomous vehicles and the electrification of transportation are not science fiction, they are the realities around the corner we must prepare for. Equally important are fundamental issues such as safety, affordability and sustainability. Right now we have the opportunity to not only reimagine how our cities and transport systems are designed, but to save thousands of Western Australians from suffering the devastating realities of road trauma.

Return to the Roaring '20s
Stefan Hajkowicz, Research Group Leader CSIRO
The Spanish Flu of 1918-19 was followed by the 'forgotten depression' of 1920-21. This was followed by a decade of unprecedented economic growth and wealth creation known as the 'Roaring Twenties'. Economic historians who studied this era have found that science, technology and innovation were the underlying growth drivers. The most important technology of the time was the general-purpose technology of electricity, which transformed all industries in all geographic regions, leading to productivity gains and wealth creation. Now we stand in the 20020s amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic and economic depression.
There are many parallels to the Spanish Flu era. Today's general-purpose technologies include artificial intelligence, data science and a wide range of information technologies. When combined with innovative business practices digital technologies can give us the roaring 2020s. This presentation will explore a digital technology and innovation-led pathway through the COVID-19 pandemic. Business-as-usual is over; but via digital transformation we can move towards business-as-better.
